Management Trainee Programme Programme Structure

Hang Seng s three-year Management Trainee Programme is offered in eight business / function streams: Commercial Banking, Financial Control, Global Banking and Markets, Insurance, Operations, Services and Technology, Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Risk and Compliance and Strategic Planning and Corporate Development. The Programme prepares recent graduates to take up executive-level positions by providing the skills and professional development needed for a high-flying banking career. Commercial Banking

What to Expect
It takes around one year to rotate around the frontline, middle-office and back-office departments of Commercial Banking (CMB). This experience will give you the necessary grounding and knowledge to take up a 24-month placement in your second and third year of the Management Trainee Programme.In addition, familiarisation sessions and exposure to related departments and functions will provide you with a valuable understanding of cross-function operations.

Attachment
CMB Chief Operating Officer s Office
You will understand the operational flow between Chief Operating Officer s Office (COO Office) and other departments within CMB. Upon completing an attachment with COO Office, you will have acquired a basic understanding of CMB business model, products, strategies and policies; as well as a general understanding of the banking business.

Corporate Wealth and Sales Management
You will be trained in how to provide professional advice to corporate customers on cash management, treasury, insurance and investment products all areas of expertise that are crucial to success in the competitive CMB segment.

Global Trade and Receivable Finance
You will have an overview on Global Trade and Receivable Finance (GTRF) products and their daily activities. Upon completing an attachment with GTRF, you will have gained practical experience of the major trade processes that are among the critical elements of providing quality lending services to customers.

Global Liquidity and Cash Management
You will understand how Global Liquidity and Cash Management (GLCM) department operates, have an overview on how GLCM works with the business segments and understand the product development and commercialization product cycle.

Relationship Management
Through building close relationships with our customers and understanding their needs, Relationship Management ensures we deliver tailor-made financial services that contribute to their business success. You will gain valuable connections and experience through managing a portfolio of commercial customers, deepen your knowledge of various industries and hone your financial analysis skills.

During your three-year programme, you will have an attachment in Hang Seng China to gain exposure to the China business and market.

Familiarisation
You will be able to gain a better understanding on the overall business direction and operations of different internal divisions. The Familiarisation programme covers Commercial Banking, Financial Control, Financial Crime Compliance, Global Banking, Operations, Services and Technology and Retail Banking and Wealth Management and visit to branch / Business Banking Centre.

Training and Development
Classroom Training
Comprehensive and logically organised classroom-based training will cover leadership and management, product and technical know-how, risk management, compliance and operations procedures specific to your Management Trainee Programme stream.

Experiential Training
Through an intensive experiential learning experience, you will enhance your capacity for self-understanding, appreciating team dynamics, problem solving, taking the initiative in and ownership of self-motivation and leading others, and relationship building.

China Assignments / Business Travel

Financial Control

What to Expect
The Financial Control Division operates like a bank inside the Bank. All of the Bank s strategic initiatives, tactical plans and business decisions has to flow through the financial system a system for which we are the key driver. We work closely with the Bank s stakeholders, including business partners, shareholders, regulators and external examiners. We function as accountants and business partners in providing comprehensive information on financial management, capital management, financial planning, financial and compliance reporting, insurance finance, finance policy and control, tax and Global Markets finance.In your first two years as a Financial Control Management Trainee, you will be given attachments to various key project initiatives. You will contribute to the development of Financial Control functions to ensure the successful implementation of new Bank initiatives and new regulatory requirements. This experience will give you the necessary grounding and knowledge to take up a 12-month placement within the Division.

After completing the programme with Financial Control, you will be ready to join our team of experts and become a long-term member of our team. In this role, you will be expected to lead a team that functions as a business partner for other internal business units, use your accounting knowledge to analyse financial information and provide advice to senior management on the future business growth of the Bank, ensure the Bank s financial health by managing its balance sheet risks and allocating resources appropriately to meet performance objectives, and work with regulators and external examiners to make sure that regulatory capital is managed in a fit and proper manner.

In addition, after three years practical experience with us as a Financial Control Management Trainee you may also be accorded a professional qualification in accountancy.

Attachment
Business Performance and Management Information
You will build a good understanding of management accounting concepts and the Bank s financial management information functions, which provide accurate, timely information to facilitate senior management in formulating business strategies and managing business growth. You will also learn valuable business analysis skills that will allow you to critically evaluate business performance and costs and learn the keys to managing balance sheet risks and allocating resources, and participate in budgetary preparation and control.Financial Reporting
This attachment allows you to gain solid expertise in meeting the requirements of regulators, such as the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, with respect to a large bank s financial information, and in the implementation of new accounting policies and practices based on newly enacted or amended statutory requirements. Also, you will participate in the preparation of the Bank s financial reports and build up your financial accounting knowledge in the banking industry.

Asset Liability and Capital Management
You will be expected to assist in preparing materials for the Bank s Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO) and take part in the preparation of risk-weighted asset calculations for capital reporting and planning.

Insurance Business Finance
You will have opportunity to participate in various insurance financial closing activities such as discussions with the Actuary Department on the financial results, life insurance investment accounting and reporting, actuarial reserve reviews and solvency margin calculations. Upon completing the attachment, you will gain an understanding of the insurance regulatory framework and various insurance products.

Global Markets Finance
You will take part in the preparation of management reports for the Bank s treasury and investment business. And you will assess the impact on profits and losses from the introduction of new products or treasury accounting standards.

What to Expect
Amidst a constantly developing regulatory environment and changing legal and regulatory requirements, Hang Seng Bank is constantly focused on the important area of Risk & Compliance.The three-year structured Management Trainee Programme with the Risk & Compliance functions will expose you to a fast emerging and professional career in the banking industry. Your first 24 months will include initial orientation, class-room training, familiarisation and attachments within and outside Risk and Compliance departments (including Financial Crime Compliance), after which you will be assigned to a designated Risk and Compliance team for your remaining 12 months to develop your in-depth knowledge.

Attachment
Retail Banking and Wealth Management Risk
You will be able to participate in how the RBWM Risk team plays the Risk Steward and Risk Advisor roles in setting the risk appetite of retail lending and monitoring the portfolio of retail & wealth management products to inform and refine credit policies, procedures and models via a wide range of risk management governance frameworks and controls.

Wholesale Credit and Market Risk
You will develop knowledge and practical experience in setting and monitoring policies and appetite for credit risk across a range of dimensions to approve credit facilities requested by wholesale banking businesses while providing independent reviews of risk and managing problem exposures. You may also understand how Risk Identification, Credit Policy, Portfolio and Controls and Analytics etc. collaborate to fulfil the second line of defense role.

Regulatory Compliance
You will be expected to form good partnership with different business streams and provide professional advice in regulatory compliance matters for line management by offering independent and objective oversight. After the attachment, you will strengthen your advisory skills and be able to become a strategic partner to provide risk consulting service for the business.

Financial Crime Compliance
You will be able to undertake the duty of Financial Crime Compliance Advisory and/or Financial Crime Risk investigations in a professional and efficient manner so that the Bank and Regulators standards are fulfilled. You will also be required to keep abreast of the new development and intelligence associated with Anti-Bribery and Corruption as well as Sanctions.

Risk Strategy / Insurance Risk
Subject to operational demands and needs, you may be attached to either of these Risk functions. You will develop fundamental knowledge in stewarding the Bank s risk activities to comply with regulatory requirements and strengthening the risk culture within the Bank.

What to Expect
The Global Banking and Markets (GBM) Management Trainee Programme will take you around 16 months to attach in various GBM businesses and related functional departments. This experience will give you the necessary grounding and knowledge to take up the subsequent 20-month placement in either Global Banking (GB) or Global Markets (GM) division. Besides departmental attachment and placement, you will also participate in short-term familiarisation sessions and visit to GBM-related businesses and functions, to give you a better understanding of various businesses and functions operations.Attachment

Treasury Solution
The Treasury Solution team in GM provides treasury products and services to the Bank s client with focus on various customer segments. With well-developed IT infrastructure, the team is able to gain quick access to key markets and provide updated financial market information to customers. During your attachment in Treasury Solution, you will be given the opportunities to support and deliver high quality and robust customer services. You will also gain experience through internal collaboration with various stakeholders such as Relationship Managers, Branches and other internal departments, these collaborations enable the team to maintain relationships with customers, identify their hedging needs and to provide appropriate treasury products and solutions.

Global Markets Chief Operating Office (GM COO)
In GM, the COO team works closely with businesses to execute business plans and deliver strategic initiatives. Besides, the team also work with various internal and external counterparts to ensure proper controls, relevant policies and regulatory requirements are in place and complied. During your attachment in GM COO, you could gain knowledge on relevant regulation, governance and control that are applicable to the GM business. Your will also gain valuable project management skills by handling business and regulatory related projects assigned.

Regulatory Compliance
You will understand how Regulatory Compliance provides proactive assistance in identifying, assessing and containing Compliance Risk; fostering a compliance culture; optimising relations with regulators; and preserving the Bank s reputation in the marketplace by ensuring that our policies comply with the spirit and letter of the laws and regulations wherever we do business.

Financial Crime Compliance
You will understand how Financial Crime Compliance supports anti-money laundering investigation, formulates policies and framework on sanctions and anti-bribery and corruption issues. Wholesale Credit and Market Risk

What to Expect
Insurance is a fast-growing business and is one of the key drivers of Hang Seng Bank. As a well-established insurance entity, we develop the full spectrum of insurance products from Life Insurance manufacturing to distribution of General Insurance and Medical products. The program is suitable for high-caliber candidates who have passion to develop your career in Insurance / Bancassurance industry.The 36-month Insurance Management Trainee Programme will expose you to our Insurance departments ranging from product development, sales management, servicing propositions, actuary to investment functions, etc. With the first 24 months of various attachments, you will gain experience and knowledge in different functions within Insurance, engaging in special projects on both quantitative and qualitative bases. Your final-year placement can be as actuarial or business professional at our core insurance departments based on your career interest and business need.

Key Exposures
Life Insurance
You will take part in supporting the business growth and Life product development, with roles in implementing new product launch initiatives, product feature design and sales performance. You will also have chance to involve in digital development as the up-and-coming trend for insurance industry.

General Insurance, Medical Insurance & MPF
You will participate in strategic management for General Insurance, Medical Insurance and MPF and collaboration with our strategic partners QBE and Bupa. This includes matching sales target and negotiated terms with our partners, as well as developing marketing and sales strategies focusing on your business lines along with sales channel analysis.

Insurance Actuarial, Risk Management and Investment
You will acquire expertise through active engagement in multiple insurance actuarial and risk management tasks, such as Asset Liability Management addressing market risk, valuation of insurance business, and product development including experience studies amongst other quantitative analysis. You will also work with our Investment team on managing the insurance premium assets.

Channel Management & Servicing Proposition
You will have the opportunity to work with different stakeholders to develop and implement multi-channel (e.g. branch network, commercial and corporate channel, digital and phone banking) strategies to meet customer demands. You will also involve in underwriting, claims and policy servicing propositions that improve client service quality.

Taking on key roles within our core divisions will give you valuable insights into our effective business practices and strategies.

What to Expect
The three-year structured Management Trainee track with Operations, Services and Technology (HOST) will expose you to the key functions of Business Services, Corporate Real Estate, Information Technology, Risk and Administration, Special Project and Transformation. Your first 24 months will include initial orientation, class-room training, familiarisation and attachments, after which you will be assigned to work in a designated business function for your remaining 12 months to gain an in-depth knowledge of specific systems and processes that underpin the running of a successful bank.Attachment
Business Services
Business Services is a team of experienced banking operations professionals who strive for delivering time-to-market, efficient and world-class processing services to customers, corporations, financial institutions and internal units. Being attached in the department within the Business Services unit will help you acquire a thorough understanding of our business, products and operations, including Banking Operations, Cards and Loans Operations, Global Markets Operations, Financial Crime Compliance Operations, Asset Management Services, Credit Services, Mortgage Services, Wealth Services, Payment Services, Supplied Services, Re-engineering and Production Management, and Chief Administration Office.

Corporate Real Estate
Corporate Real Estate Department provides a wide range of property services, including facilities management, collateral appraisal, capital projects management and property asset management. Our real estate portfolio includes leased and owned properties for operational use and investment purposes. We provide professional services and advice internally to staff and business units and externally to landlords and tenants. Under this attachment, you will acquire professional knowledge in relation to property markets, building and construction, property-related regulations, and general management skills such as business analysis, stakeholder management and communication / negotiation skills.

HOST Risk and Administration Office
The HOST Risk and Administration Office provides a variety of services and support to HOST units and internal users of the Bank. You will play a key role in managing business risk and control, providing corporate services, planning and development activities, operational management and procurement. Under this attachment, you will acquire a solid understanding of the operational and procurement needs of various departments. You will also learn how to develop comprehensive solutions to help internal units and individuals operate more efficiently and effectively.

Information Technology facilitates the success of our business. It underpins the reshaping of the Bank into an organisation that is more streamlined, more efficient and delivers faster for the business and our customers. Under this attachment, you will learn the latest IT applications for the banking industry as well as the importance of IT in enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of the Bank. You will also gain knowledge of the Bank s IT infrastructure and supporting services, which are both fundamental components of the Bank s daily business operations.

Special Project
The Special Project Team provides dedicated oversight of and support for the implementation of the Bank s Financial Crime Risk Management programme (which covers issues such as anti-money laundering, sanctions and anti-bribery & corruption) and building a more effective and sustainable Financial Crime Risk management capability for the Bank. The team also drives the strengthening and deployment of the Bank s Critical Data Quality Management Framework and is a frontrunner in the leadership and delivery of the Bank s global data governance and control structure. Under this attachment, you will gain experience in providing support to the Financial Crime Risk Management programme and data quality management initiatives.

Transformation
Transformation is a programme management unit that facilitates the delivery of changes across businesses and functions. Under this attachment, you will develop your programme and project management skills in areas such as consulting, business analysis, process design and engineering, communication, stakeholder management, resource management and change management. Through participating in or leading projects, you will learn more about various business / function strategies and priorities, and how to achieve successful delivery of change programmes or projects that help to grow the Bank s business and/or enhance organisational effectiveness.

During this three-year programme, you will also have an attachment in Hang Seng China to gain exposure to our China business.

Familiarisation
You will be able to gain a better understanding of the overall business direction and operations of different internal divisions. The Familiarisation programme covers Commercial Banking, Financial Control, Financial Crime Compliance, Global Banking, Operations, Services and Technology, and Retail Banking and Wealth Management as well as visits to branches / Business Banking Centres.

Classroom Training
Comprehensive and logically organised classroom-based training will cover leadership and management, product and technical know-how, risk management, compliance, and operations procedures specific to your Management Trainee Programme stream.

Experiential Training
Through an intensive experiential learning experience, you will enhance your capacity for self-understanding, appreciating team dynamics, problem solving, taking the initiative in and ownership of self-motivation and leading others, and relationship building.

China Assignments / Business Travel
There are opportunities for business travel and have China assignments to learn more about the Bank s overseas business and operations.

External Conferences
We regularly send Management Trainees to attend financial and banking-related conferences to ensure our future executives and leaders keep abreast of best practices within our industry by learning from thought leaders and networking with other banking professionals.

Mentorship and Coaching
During each of your attachments, you will be assigned a mentor who will provide guidance and coaching. You will also be assigned a Management Trainee buddy from the same Programme stream for additional support.

Retail Banking and Wealth Management

What to Expect
Our dynamic Retail Banking and Wealth Management team provides customers with bespoke financial solutions to help them manage their wealth. These solutions include account services, mortgages, personal loans and asset management delivered through our extensive network of service channels that includes branches, private banking, and online and mobile banking platforms.The 36-month Management Trainee Programme provides you with comprehensive exposure to our Retail Banking and Wealth Management business through three 12-month phases focusing on frontline, middle-office and back-office operations. In your first 12-month rotation, you will complete a series of attachments in product development, channel innovation, sales & marketing planning, as well as risk and compliance. You will then have the opportunity to put the knowledge and skills you have acquired into practice in the branch network environment as part of learning more about how to meet the needs of customers and the core processes of branch operations. Your final-year placement will have you working as part of a team that is focused on business management, strategic projects or other initiatives that are supporting change and innovation across different areas of our Retail Banking and Wealth Management business.

Key Exposures
Customer-facing Operations
You will develop customer handling and business planning skills through connecting with a diverse range of retail customers in one of our branches. You will learn about what goes into creating a great customer experience and how our products and service propositions serve and support our customers.

Product Development
You will acquire expertise on the product development lifecycle for a variety of retail banking products in areas such as investment, insurance, secured lending (e.g. mortgages) and unsecured lending (e.g. credit cards and personal loans).

Channel Management
You will have the opportunity to work with different stakeholders to develop and implement multi-channel (e.g. branch network, phone banking and mobile banking) strategies that improve client services, meet new client demands and optimise channel distribution costs.

Customer Value Management
You will develop a good understanding of different customer segments and how to identify and analyse market intelligence that will help sharpen your business judgment skills. You will learn how to develop customer analytics for retail banking customers and customer-centric solutions that will drive an enhanced customer experience.

Taking on key roles within our core divisions will give you valuable insights into our effective business practices and strategies.

Strategic Planning and Corporate Development

What to Expect
Apply NowStrategic Planning and Corporate Development Department (PNG) functions as the central planning and strategy development group of the Bank and addresses topics at the top of senior management s agendas. This role will provide the opportunity to work on different bank level strategic initiatives across all businesses and functions of the Bank, covering bank strategy development, business strategic study, corporate development and executive office support.In your three years as PNG Management Trainee, you will support the team to perform four major roles, which include: (1) Strategic Analysis: conducting fact-based analysis to support key strategic decision making and prioritisation; (2) Strategy Articulation: synthesising strategy in a concise and easy-to-communicate manner for seamless translation into actions; (3) Mobilisation: leading or acting as the bridge for bank-wide efforts to develop strategic propositions, build capabilities and deliver special projects; and (4) Oversight and Credible Challenge: providing an independent view and governance of activities through various taskforces and platforms to ensure alignment with overall strategy of the Bank.

After completing the programme with PNG, you will be ready to join our team of business strategists and provide trusted advices to different businesses and functions on their strategic development.

Exposure and Attachment
Bank strategy development
You will help formulate the Bank s medium term strategies, support execution, coordination, tracking and evaluation according to the Bank s strategic planning framework. You will also have opportunities to take lead on the articulation and mobilisation to achieve strategic priorities.

Business strategic study
You will lead or support strategic business studies that are cross-businesses, functions and/or geographies in nature, derive actionable insights and make appropriate recommendations to the Bank s senior management.

Corporate development
You will have the opportunity to take part in the execution of acquisitions and disposals (A&D) projects, support governance of the Bank s corporate investments and exploit synergies in accordance to the Bank s strategic priorities.

Executive office support
You will support key activities of executive office including but not limited to presentation materials for external and internal meetings, relationship management with key external and industry bodies and monitoring of business results; advocate and facilitate cross-business collaborations.

Other business attachment
You will have the opportunities to attach to other businesses and functions in the Bank to gain a holistic exposure to Hang Seng s bank-wide operations. Such attachments may include:
