The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized research-oriented comprehensive public university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is rapidly developing into one of the leading technology and innovation hubs of the world. UM is placed No. 145 in the THE World University Rankings and placed No. 285 in the QS World University Rankings. With a scenic campus of approximately 1 km2 on Hengqin island, UM has achieved significant progress in the past decade as evidenced by its rising international repute, state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, and the establishment of three State Key Laboratories in microelectronics, Chinese medical sciences, and internet of things for smart city. To support economic diversification of MSAR and deepen collaboration between MSAR and Guangdong Province in Hengqin island, UM will continue to invest in cutting-edge research and develop interdisciplinary programmes in key strategic areas including precision oncology, advanced materials, regional oceanography, artificial intelligence and robotics, data science, cognitive and brain science and economics and finance. Leveraging its 4-in-1 model of education and residential college system, UM provides all-round undergraduate education, nurturing talent to support social and economic development in MSAR and the GBA as a whole. In addition, UM is currently establishing a campus in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, which is expected to be operational in 2028. With unprecedented growth and development, UM offers a wide range of opportunities for high-calibre talents at all levels to achieve their career goals. It may be noted that English is the working language and the primary medium of instruction at UM.

The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) is an established and distinguished multinational, scholarly community. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in English Studies (focusing simultaneously on literary studies and linguistics), as well as elective courses in translation studies. At the graduate level the Department hosts two MA programmes in (i) English Studies and (ii) Translation, and PhD degrees in either (a) Literary Studies or (b) Linguistics. FAH is home to both the Centre for Linguistics (li***.mo[点击查看]) and the Centre for Studies in Translation, Interpreting and Cognition (cs***.mo[点击查看]) . The Department of English actively offers courses in the Computational Linguistics specialisation of the MSc in Data Science, a programme offered by the Institute of Collaborative Innovation (ic***.mo[点击查看]).

The Department of English invites applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in the discipline of Linguistics.

The Department of English seeks applicants who are formally trained in linguistics to complement its existing strengths in theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics. While we are open to all specializations, preference will be given to candidates with expertise in employing artificial intelligence or computational methodologies in their research. Given the linguistic context in Macau, interest in Asian varieties of English is also advantageous. The successful candidate will develop and teach linguistics courses in the BA and MA programmes in English Studies and develop a programme of research and publication that will include supervision of students in the PhD in Linguistics (English) programme.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should hold a PhD in Linguistics or related areas, teaching experience at the tertiary level (particularly for the post of Associate Professor), and a record of research appropriate to the rank of Associate/Assistant Professor. Applicants should be able to demonstrate competence in teaching, promising potential for publication, and a willingness to provide service to the University and the Department of English.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2026.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) will be commensurate with the successful applicants academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
