FAQ

The answers you need to know

Entry requirements

1. What are the minimum entry requirements?

For our Graduate roles, you must have an undergraduate degree, be eligible to work permanently in the country that you are applying to and, as English is our business language, it needs to be at least one of those you speak fluently. These are our only requirements as our selection and assessment system is designed to measure strengths, fit to our business and cognitive agility.

Interns must be in their penultimate (second to last) year of study. We will accept internship applications from final year students who are required to complete mandatory National or Military service after graduation.

You must have the legal right to work on a permanent basis in the country for which you re applying for the full duration of the internship. The Bank does not sponsor work permits for the purposes of Internships. If you are applying in the US, you must have the legal right to work on a permanent basis.

2. Do I need a background in finance?

No, we want and encourage applications from candidates from all degree disciplines.

3. Do I need any work experience?

No. Work experience can help by giving you an insight into what it s like to work in a bank and the type of work you might like to do or be good at, but we do not expect applicants to have prior work experience.

Eligibility

4. Does Standard Chartered sponsor work permits for graduates?

No, you must have the permanent legal right to work in the country that you are applying to.

5. Can I apply to more than one graduate role?

No, you must choose one role. If you want more information to help choose which opportunities are right for you, you can find out more about Us, join one of our Meet us sessions or campus presentations and networking sessions.

Application process

6. What is your application process?

The first step in our online application process is a short application form. After this form you will be invited to take our online Strengths Assessment, which is designed to help you, and us, get a sense of what you are great at. As soon as you complete this assessment you will receive your own Strengths Report over email. This will tell you what the assessment tells us about your strengths.

To be great at the types of roles we offer, we are on the lookout for people with a certain combination of strengths. Everyone who progresses past the Strengths Assessment will be invited to take our Abstract and Numerical tests.

Again, we will email you immediately with a report fully describing your results.

Finally, for all those who progress beyond ability testing, the last online step is a strengths based video interview. This is our first chance to meet you properly and ask you questions about how you like to work.

7. After I submit my application will I receive feedback?

Yes. Paying you back for the time it takes to complete assessments is really important to us. The first step of our application process is a Strengths Assessment, and we provide an individual Strengths report to every applicant.

After this stage, if your strengths match up with what we look for, you will move on to our Abstract and Numerical tests. Again you will receive all your results from us so you know how you are progressing.

8. Can I apply to more than one region?

No, you can only apply to one role/region at a time. Nevertheless, you may complete an internship in one region with a view to move to another to take up a permanent role with us. The international nature of our business and our Programmes often attracts students that are studying overseas and we love to recruit the internationally minded. The only criteria is that you must have the permanent legal right to work in the country you are applying to.

9. Can I reapply if I am unsuccessful?

Yes, but only the following year. We accept one application per applicant, per year.

10. I have changed my mind and want to change streams - can I switch to another position?

If you make it to the face-to-face interview stage, the first person you will meet will be a member of our global Graduate Talent Acquisition team. If you wish to change streams, you can discuss it with us then and we can let you know what is possible.

11. How do I submit my CV/Resume?

Our application process is set up to capture your basic information so you can get started on your application quickly. You can upload your CV to our system when you register. We don t shortlist based on your CV, our selection is based on your strengths and aptitude.

12. Can I search for non-graduate jobs at Standard Chartered?

Yes, visit our Careers page to search for roles.

13. What is the deadline for applying?

You can apply online from 1st September onwards. We do not have a deadline but we look to close most of our vacancies before February so it s wise to apply early.

19. I wasn't asked for a username and password when taking the tests - how do you know it's me?

The only time your username and password is not required, is if you click on the link in the email invitation. This is because the link is unique to the user.

Our testing systems are designed with this in mind. The system will automatically save your progress so you can re-enter the test and pick it up where you left off.

22. Can I complete practice questions beforehand?

To help, you can get ready for your aptitude tests by taking practices tests click here to take a practice assessment.

When you login in to complete the actual tests, each assessment has a practice section that should be completed first. You can attempt the practice questions as many times as you like before starting the assessment. The practice questions provide feedback on your answers, detailing what the correct answer should be and why. If you would like a little more practice after your first attempt, click Leave Practice and you will be taken back to the home page where you can choose to start again. Practicing is a great way to increase your familiarity with the type of questions asked.

23. Are these tests available on the internet?

Our assessments are not freely available online.

24. Are the tests all the same?

The tests are adaptive which means that it is incredibly unlikely that any two people could receive the same assessment. Questions are selected based on how you performed on the previous question. There are also multiple versions of each question so practically every test is unique.

25. How much time do I need to complete the assessments?

The assessment time limits are:

Abstract Reasoning - 15 minutes total

Numerical Reasoning - 16 minutes total

Each question is individually timed. You should complete each assessment in one attempt but you can choose to take each assessment separately if you prefer. When completing the assessment, make sure that you will not be disturbed. We also recommend that you close any other applications, software and browsers on the computer you are using.

26. What happens if I selected my answer but the time ran out before I clicked submit?

Your answer will still be submitted. If you select an answer so that it appears in the Selected answer box, but do not click Accept and Continue , the system will submit the answer on your behalf if the time runs out.
